As a child of two scientists, I'm in love with the theme of this session. I've had some super out of the box themes for cake smashes lately, and I LOVE the opportunity to get creative and come up with ideas.
When mom told me her theme was science, I immediately started ordering beakers and test tubes, goggles, and a little lab coat for little man to wear. I love the way this turned out! We used Jello in the beakers so that if they got tipped over, we wouldn't have water all over to cut our session short.
When everyone came in for their session, little man was shy. You'll see in the pictures, he was nervous and kept wandering his way back over to mom, but he REALLY wanted to eat his cake. At one point, you'll see in the pictures, he tried to pick up the cake to bring it over to eat with mom, but it didn't go to plan. ;) By the end of the session, he was ALL OVER that cake and even discovered that Jello is amazing. Such a fun session!

I love Alaska. I was born and raised here, so that's probably not a secret. Because we live in such a unique state, I get a lot of requests for Alaskan themed shoots. This one, while not specifically Alaskan, can certainly pass as an Alaska theme. This is a lumberjack themed cake smash!
I got to do little man's newborn photos, so I'm always so happy when parents bring their newborns to me 12 months later to do their 1 year milestone photos, whether its a cake smash session or not. I love seeing how they've grown and getting to see their little personalities. This little lumberjack was so smiley and so happy to share his cake with their family dog. So sweet!

Ok, so in my last blog post, I told you that I had two little mermaids come in to my studio on the same day for identical sessions. This is mermaid session number 2!
I got to do some outdoor photos of this sweet girl when she was 9 months, and I got to see her again for her 1 year photos in studio! The best part of my job is being able to see kids at their milestone sessions so I can see how much they've grown and changed and their little personalities start to show.
This girl rocked her 1 year old shoot and looooooved all the seashells there were to look at.
I could take her pictures all day because can you believe how gorgeous? And those eyelashes are to. die. for.

It might not come as a surprise to anyone that I love cake smashes. I do a lot of cake smashes, and every time someone comes to me with a new cake smash idea, all I can think of is the possibilities.
When people ask me for suggestions on cake smash themes, I always have a list of ideas or themes that I would like to do or are my favorites that I've already done. So when my client came to me and said she wanted to do a mermaid cake smash, one of the themes at the verrrrry top of my list, I was excited. And then it just so happened that I had another person request a milestone session on the same day. So I had two adorable little 1 year olds in my studio on the same day for a mermaid session and I was in heaven. Aqua, and lavender and glitter? You had me at aqua.
I got to do this little lady's newborn session, and a couple of sessions in between, and I can't tell you how honored I am when clients come to me for all of the first year's milestones. Tiny people change such an incredible amount in the first year of life, and it's so fun for me to see a tiny newborn turn into a toddler eating cake. Here is this little lady at her newborn session. I remember her well, she had the most beautiful, soft newborn skin.
And she's still just as gorgeous 12 months later!

I love cake smashes. They're so much fun! I get to get super creative and design a backdrop and set that I think will go with your theme or vision, and I also love cake. Win-win!
When we came up with the idea for a woodland animal theme, I was so excited! Such an awesome theme. So I went to my amazing sister and asked her for some help with creativity and craftiness, and I was not disappointed. She was a fountain of ideas, and you see all those little animals? She made them. She's so cool. So when you book a themed session with me, you not only get some photography, you're getting some amazing creativity and craftiness from her!

It's February already! We've made it through the longest month of the year, and I'm fairly sure instead of only being a month, January was at least 3 months this year. We got so much snow, which for sure helps with the gloominess. The other thing that helps is the parade of kiddos that come through my studio, for sure brightening my day every time!
I love cake smashes, they are so much fun to watch happen. I know that we see pictures all over the internet of kiddos absolutely digging into their cake, making a huge mess, but I can tell you that that is the exception, and not the rule. Most kids are pretty timid about it, so it definitely takes some convincing, and even some just putting cake in their mouth, to let them know its ok, it tastes good! This little man started out timid, but once we were able to get a good bite of cake in his mouth, he loved it! He still was a little timid about getting his hands dirty, but his mom wasn't, so we managed to feed him some bites and we still had fun.
Speaking of his cake, his mom made it. I'm always so impressed when parents bring homemade cakes in because I tried to make a smash cake for my daughter's first birthday and it was definitely a Pinterest fail. How cute is this cake though? So much more skill than I have.
Maybe I need to practice making cakes, that actually sounds pretty fun. I can be my own taste tester!
